“BUILDING” A PIECE (SONG)
Piano players are like house builders. Composers provide the plan or blueprints of the song (musical house). When a house builder builds a house, he/she must first study, or analyze, the plans. As piano players, or performers of the song, we must analyze the song. This can include the history of the song/composer/genre, but more importantly, we need to understand how the song is put together “theoretically” (key signature, patterns, where the melody goes, etc.)
Next, we need to build the frame. This refers to the rhythm and beat of the song. One way to “build the frame” is to “conduct” (but not play) the song, which can be done by purely sight-reading or listening to it on a CD or on you tube. Singing or humming the melody is also useful.
Once the plans of a “musical house” have been studied, or analyzed, and we build the frame by knowing the rhythm or structure of the song, we have the basics to begin to play and enjoy the “musical house” or song.
