LEARNING TO PLAY PIANO AS ADULTS

It seems that a lot of adult students learning to play the piano for the 1st time, are more passionate and dedicated to the art, than younger students. Adult students seem to be more aware of the fun, self-confidence and personal growth that playing brings.

There are a lot of reasons why adults take up piano lessons"

1) Recently widowed or other personal loss

2) "Relief" from "emply nest" syndrome

3) Retired

4) Returning to the dream they had to give up when they were younger

5) Realizing that learning to play piano keeps their mind "sharp"

6) Release from personal stress or other issues they need a break from

and more...

WHAT SHOULD AN ADULT STUDENT LOOK FOR IN A PIANO TEACHER?

1) A Piano teacher that you feel comfortable with in the sharing of your goals, what you know so far and what you want to learn to do in the future in your piano playing.

2) A Piano teacher that uses humor. Sometimes playing piano is difficult and it is great if both teacher and student can use humor through those times.

3) A Piano teacher that uses a good adult curriculum. Adults learn differently than elementary-age students. For example, I personally thing that adults should learn chords and how to use them as soon as they can. This is where, developmentally, adults are different than young children whose fingers/hands are not strong enough yet to play a lot of chords.

THERE ARE MANY BENEFITS TO LEARNING TO PLAY THE PIANO:

1) Confidence

2) A sense of accomplishment. What a great feeling to know that you have learned a new skill or a new song.

3) Pleasure. There's no way around it, playing piano/music brings one great pleasure.

4) Bringing music to others. Joyful Sounds adult students have played for each other at events the studio holds twice a year - a BBQ and a Christmas Celebraion. Adult students have also reported playing for family and friends and also at retirement homes.

As an adult student wrote in "Clavier Companion" magazine, "You are never to old for the joy".
